Stormwater pollutant removal in grassed swales
The grass-covered surfaces of green infrastructure facilities, such as grass swales and filter strips, are not only functional to convey runoff but also play an important role in removal of pollutants from stormwater runoff.
Infiltration of stormwater into the underlying soil is an important process for pollutant removal in grass filter strips and swales. Consequently, pollutants are trapped and accumulated in the soil of such facilities. In addition, maintenance needs and reconstruction of swales raise the question of how to handle the potentially contaminated soil.
