New projects on stormwater impact and treatment granted
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has granted funding for five new research projects within Stormwater&Sewers, aimed at increasing knowledge about the impact of stormwater to water pollution and possible treatment solutions.
One project studies treatment in a newly constructed stormwater wetland, focusing on “emerging” substances such as PFAS and previously overlooked metals, carried out in collaboration with VA SYD and Sweden Water Research. Two projects place particular emphasis on PFAS – investigating both their occurrence and transport in stormwater from areas with different land uses, as well as their contribution from atmospheric deposition and baseflows. A fourth project examines how infiltration in swales may affect groundwater quality. Finally, a method using an FTIR sensor is being developed to map (micro)plastics from paint and plastic surfaces in urban environments. The results are expected to provide important input for future stormwater management and protection of water resources.
