New PhD candidate to conduct research on sustainable stormwater sediment management

In August 2026, Angus Jansen joined the Urban Water Engineering research group at Luleå University of Technology as a PhD candidate.

His research focuses on urban stormwater and sediment management. By characterising sediments from different types of stormwater facilities and developing technical solutions, he aims to support more circular sediment management, reduce the spread of pollutants to receiving waters and improve the maintenance of stormwater systems.

Angus holds an MSc in Water Science and Management from Utrecht University. He conducted his master’s thesis at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), where he investigated the use of bioassays as indicators of water quality at urban overflow points and assessed the ecological implications of stormwater discharges.

At Luleå University of Technology, Angus will work within the project Underwater – Sediments from Risk to Resource in Urban Stormwater Flows, in collaboration with a network of national actors from the water and wastewater sector.
