Stormwater is both a societal challenge and a valuable resource. This became particularly clear after the record-breaking rains in Luleå, where August was the rainiest month since records began in 1930. At the same time, parts of southern Sweden received significantly less precipitation than normal.
A changing climate means that our cities need to be able to handle both heavier rainfall and longer periods of drought. Research conducted at Stormwater&Sewers and DRIZZLE—Center for Stormwater Management —provides insights into where stormwater systems need to be strengthened, what other solutions can reduce flood risks, and how stormwater can be reused for purposes such as irrigation and toilet flushing.
On Stormwater Day, we highlight the importance of sustainable stormwater management—for more resilient cities and a wiser use of our water resources.
