REV:EU: Regenerative Vital Water for European Cities (2026-2028)
In REV:EU we develop sustainable wastewater solutions in cities. Stockholm, Oslo, and Paris will serve as testbeds to develop and implement innovative circular water and wastewater solutions. The project is funded by Formas through the EU Driving Urban Transitions programme and coordinated by the city of Stockholm.
Water scarcity and eutrophication are two phenomena clearly showing the need for changing our wastewater systems from linear to circular ones. REV:EU focuses on source-separating wastewater systems bringing together stakeholders from Sweden, Norway, and France, linking the work linked to three cities—Stockholm, Oslo, and Paris—which serve as test beds for the development and implementation of circular wastewater solutions. Particular focus is placed on recovering plant nutrients from urine and on the reuse of greywater. Urine-diverting systems are implemented in Paris and Stockholm, where the collected urine will be converted into a fertiliser used for green spaces in the city. Separate collection and local treatment of greywater is tested in Stockholm and Oslo.
Luleå University of Technology, together with Stockholm’s Water and Waste utility (Stockholm Vatten och Avfall), will design and test a pilot facility for greywater treatment. We will test greywater quality variability and develop criteria for designing the biological treatment stage. The treated greywater will then be used for irrigating park vegetation.
REV:EU’s overall goal is to contribute to the transition towards reduced resource use in our wastewater systems.
You can read more about the project on the website of Stockholm city. We will be organizing regular seminars—stay tuned!
