Advanced Modular Treatment Trains for Urban Stormwater to Protect the Receiving Waters (2017-2022)
In this project a system of stormwater treatment unit processes is developed that can be strategically combined to form advanced modular treatment trains (AMTTs) for stormwater treatment in urban areas. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas.
In Sweden, most of stormwater from roads and urban areas is discharged untreated into receiving waters, even though such discharges may contain high concentrations of pollutants. Environmental authorities have recently increased the focus on stormwater.
In this project, a system of stormwater treatment unit processes is developed that can be strategically combined to form advanced modular treatment trains (AMTTs) for treating urban stormwater to various degrees, ranging from the basic to the advanced. In principle, the developed AMTTs will comprise some or all of the following elements: a pond inlet sediment trap, a system of flow conditioning baffles serving to enhance pond settling, and pond effluent polishing, by flocculent settling and/or membrane filtration as advanced methods for post-treatment.
The main focus of research lays on increasing the removal of targeted pollutants by enhancing the separation of small particles, colloids and the dissolved fraction by intensified pre-treatment in the pond and novel methods for post-treatment. The investigations of hydraulics issues will be conducted by using CFD modelling and pilot scale experiments in a hydraulics lab, treatment processes will be studied in the laboratory. The aim of the project is to further develop these techniques in order to increase their practical applicability and to facilitate their implementation.
The project is funded by Formas. It is a collaboration of Urban Water Engineering at LTU and the Czech Technical University in Prague.
