Treatment of stormwater in bioretention: effect of biochar amendments (2021-2022)
Tough biochar is highly recommended by industry and end-users, there is still a lack of knowledge about its impact on the functioning of stormwater biofilters both in Sweden and internationally.
Existing knowledge is incomplete or based mainly on laboratory results with varying results. Both industry, consultants and municipalities regularly recommend biochar as an important ingredient in filter material. Despite this, there is currently no systematic evaluation of the effect of biochar on treatment in field installations.
The project therefore aims to evaluate four stormwater biofilters in Växjö. The aim is to quantify the effect of adding biochar to biofilters by investigating two stormwater biofilters with and two stormwater biofilters without biochar.
Project time: 2021-2022 | Financier: Swedish Environmental Protection Agency | Partner: Växjö municipality
