SODA - Collaboration for sustainable stormwater management on neighbourhood level (2021-2025)
Problems and challenges connected to flooding, discharge of polluted water and water scarcity are predicted to increase in our cities. Climate change and urbanisation require that stormwater is managed both above and below ground in a safe and cost-effective way. In our cities, space is at a premium, both above and below ground, and so the management of stormwater needs to be integrated with other infrastructure and in all locations where appropriate.
Background
Nevertheless, today, underground pipes are almost exclusively used to manage stormwater and progress towards more sustainable management is still relatively slow. This is particularly evident on residential land (both private and municipal) which represents about 70% of all land in the city. In addition to adapting to the effects of climate change and urbanisation, sustainable management of stormwater can create added value in terms of, for example, ecosystem services.
Project goals
This project will provide a solid foundation for further work towards increased implementation and incentives for sustainable stormwater management measures on neighbourhood land through (1) policy innovation and sustainability analysis, (2) technical standardisation and innovation and (3) new business models. The project is based on a broad and extensive collaboration between problem owners, clients, industry, authorities, certification bodies and academia.
Project time and funding
The project is financed by Vinnova and runs through 2021 - 2023 with an extension period from 2024 to 2025.
