Maintenance and sediment management framework
This development journey focuses on developing, testing and evaluating new technical solutions, or further refining existing methods, to optimise the maintenance of stormwater facilities and the management of the sediments that arise in these systems. The need is rooted in the challenges municipalities face with large volumes of sediment from street sweeping and accumulations in hundreds of thousands of stormwater facilities, resulting in costly maintenance measures where there is a need to examine current efficiency and how it can be improved. The goal is to develop technologies that reduce the spread of pollutants while also simplifying the collection, sampling and removal of sediments, thereby creating conditions for reuse and resource recovery. The solutions being evaluated focus primarily on the emptying and sampling of sediments, including grate structures and self-emptying stormwater facilities that improve sediment separation and facilitate emptying, as well as sensor technology, which can increase understanding of when and where facilities should be emptied.
