BEAR – Improving Biogas Efficiency in Arctic Regions through Data-Driven Process Optimization
The BEAR project aims to boost biogas production in Arctic regions through smart process optimization, new substrates, and improved microbiology. The goal is to increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and contribute to a more sustainable and profitable biogas sector in northern Scandinavia.
About BEAR
Project period: January 1, 2026 – December 31, 2028
Funding body: Interreg Aurora
BEAR is a project funded by Interreg Aurora with the goal of increasing biogas-based energy production in Arctic regions by improving the efficiency of biogas plants. The project focuses on three integrated areas: predictive process optimization, the development of innovative substrates, and improved microbiology.
The project is based on the further development of the dynamic model BITUPROP, in which a smart control system is being developed that uses real-time data to forecast process performance up to two weeks in advance. Combined with improved substrates and microbial processes, this enables more precise feeding strategies, higher fermentation efficiency, and an improved energy balance.
Biogas production in northern Scandinavia is particularly challenging due to the cold climate, which entails higher investment costs and limits the expansion of new facilities. By testing and validating the project’s solutions in several biogas plants, BEAR aims to increase energy production, strengthen self-sufficiency, reduce methane emissions, and improve profitability.
The project is being carried out in collaboration between stakeholders in Sweden and Finland and is primarily aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises in the biogas sector. The results will contribute to the development of sustainable, decentralized energy production in line with the EU’s Green Deal and REPowerEU.
At LTU, the focus is on developing substrates and process improvements to increase biogas production.
