GenSUN 2.0. Gendering science and engineering professionals and their role as motors in the green transition of mining and forestry
The green transition requires professionals to come together in innovative organizations that promote breakthrough ideas and behaviours. Science and engineering professionals are a particularly necessary engine for the transformation of mining and forestry.
Implementing change has proved more difficult in workplaces and industries built on gender segregation. Traditionally, forestry and mining have a strong association with men and masculinities, but women in these professions are increasing in number. Having more women is important, but current structures and cultures risk preventing the industries from truly benefiting from their skills. Based on interviews with geologists/geoengineers and foresters, this project contributes to the green transition by developing new gender theory with the capacity to challenge existing segregation in the industries. An interdisciplinary research team will enable the development of gender theories in relation to nuanced insights into changing skill requirements and production processes related to scientific and technical professionals in mining and forestry.
