Course content:
This course provides a basic introduction to gender equality perspectives in research. It addresses issues related to representation and working conditions in academic organizations, as well as the content and conduct of research, from a gender and gender equality perspective. The course also introduces gender mainstreaming as a strategy for universities and higher education institutions, including the challenges and opportunities it may entail. Through workshops, doctoral students will practice applying these perspectives within their own research field.
Learning outcomes:
After completing the course, the doctoral student shall be able to:
- Describe basic concepts in the scientific discourse on gender equality in research.
- Reflect on gender mainstreaming as a strategy within universities and higher education institutions.
- Identify and provide examples of gender and gender equality aspects in their own research and research environment.
These intended learning outcomes address the national qualification requirement for the doctoral degree, as specified in point 3.2 of Appendix B to the individual study plan.
Course methods:
The course is delivered through lectures, mandatory literature seminars, and workshops, where active participation is required. The lectures introduce the course’s central themes: gender and gender equality perspectives in academic organizations and scientific research, as well as gender mainstreaming as a strategy for universities and higher education institutions. In the literature seminars, key concepts are introduced and discussed based on empirical examples. During the workshops, doctoral students practice applying a gender and gender equality perspective to analyze and reflect on their research environment and field of study. The course concludes with an individual written assignment. It is conducted entirely online using digital tools.

The course is assessed through active participation in literature seminars and workshops, as well as through an individual written assignment.
