Instrumental Analysis - Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) 5.0 credits FOR040F
SYLLABUS, graduate-level course
Credits: 5
Course code: FOR040F
Level of study: doctoral level
Prerequisites:
Admitted to a doctoral program in the fields of natural sciences or engineering.
Course content:
The purpose of the course is to provide an introduction to established techniques for characterizing materials, namely scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The following topics will be covered in the course:
- Imaging and magnification in SEM, electron-sample interactions, interaction volume, backscattered electrons, secondary electrons, detectors;
- Contrast, electron gun, electron lenses, aberration, astigmatism, resolution;
- Column settings;
- Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy (WDS);
- Back-scattered electron diffraction (EBSD);
- Sample preparation, cryo-SEM.
Learning objectives:
The student should be able to understand and explain the fundamentals of sample preparation, SEM imaging and magnification, electron-proton interactions, detectors, imaging modes, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy (WDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and cryo-SEM.
Implementation:
The course consists of a number of lectures covering the theoretical part of the course and a mandatory laboratory session.
Assessment:
The course is assessed through a written exam and a lab report
Grading scale: Pass/Fail
