Introduction to Artistic Research
ECTS/HP: 7,5
Course code: ETKS015
Educational level: third-cycle course.
Eligibility requirements: The course is open for students admitted to third-cycle studies at LTU or equivalent at other universities.
Entry requirements:
No
Course content:
This doctoral course introduces participants to the foundations, debates, and practices of artistic research, with a particular emphasis on practice-led and practice-based methodologies. The course explores how artistic practice can generate, embody, and communicate knowledge. The course engages with the following themes:
Lineage and principles of artistic research: situating artistic research in relation to art worlds, arts education, as well as in broader academic traditions and cultural contexts.
Practice as research: introduction to methodological perspectives and approaches, and examples across art, design, performance, theatre, music, and related fields. Interdisciplinary collaborations, its challenges and possibilities.
Knowledge forms: Embodied, tacit, and experiential knowledge: exploring how artistic research contributes to knowledge across the arts and science. This also entails a basic understanding of how decolonizing and inclusive methods can be further developed.
Publication formats: Introduction to multimodal and online publishing in the form of video essays, audio papers, performances and expositions in the Research Catalogue.
Learning outcomes:
The course aims to contribute to course participants:
Basic understanding of artistic research, its principles and practices, and knowledge forms.
Ability to identify artistic challenges and relevant methods, and further, to apply these in a tentative research plan.
Ability to critically reflect on artistic research’s practical, academic, and social implications, including sustainability, gender equality and diversity perspectives.
Basic understanding of formats for dissemination of knowledge in artistic research.
Course methods:
The course is based on lectures, seminars and individual reading and writing assignments.
Module 1 Artistic research – an overview (3 ECTS)
In the first module, the participant is introduced to some of the fundamental aspects of doctoral education in artistic research. The literature introduces knowledge forms, methodological approaches and publication formats in the field. Elective literature is provided related to the different artistic disciplines relevant to each individual student. Mandatory texts are starred * in the literature list. Examination of module 1 consists of a written reflection and an oral presentation. These should summarize different research approaches and also include a reflection on whether they can be relevant to the participant’s own research. The written assignment is to be submitted one week before module 2, wherein the work is presented and discussed orally.
Module 2 Artistic research - current examples in the field (3 ECTS)
In the second module, the participant chooses, in collaboration with their supervisor, 3-5 publications that are relevant to their own research subject. These should reflect possible research methods or topics that could be useful for the participant’s own research and may, for example, be research articles or dissertations. Examination of module 2 consists of a written reflection that shows both potential and challenges identified by the participant, based on the chosen literature and personal thoughts.
Module 3 Artistic research project plan (1.5 ECTS)
In the third module, course participants use the insights they have gained during the course to develop a research proposal for their own research studies, describing aims, research questions, methods and project design. The proposal is submitted in writing for examination and feedback.
Examination form:
Module 1 written and oral examination pass/fail
Module 2 written and oral examination pass/fail
Module 2 written and oral examination pass/fail
Grading scale: Pass/Fail.
