Research Interests
I use density functional theory modeling to increase our fundamental understanding of chemical reactions in solution and at interfaces. My research is mainly focused on predicting catalysts for energy conversion and large scale industrial processes. Catalyst development is based on the evaluation of reaction mechanisms and fundamental materials properties. Taking advantage of these insights I then design, predict and test promising candidates using state of the art computational methods.
Currrently, I am involved in research on electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 into valuable chemicals and the development of catalysts for the electrosynthesis of chlorate from water and sodium chloride. Chlorate is a central ingredient for the production of pulp and paper. In my research I consider both homogeneous catalysts like porphyrins or phthalocyanines and heterogeneous transition metal oxide based catalysts.
In addition to catalyst design I am also active in the development of methods for the prediction and understanding of acid-base chemistry of molecules and solids in water and non-aqueous solvents. These methods and insights serve as a basis for the prediction of catalysts and the development of reaction mechanisms.
