Nele Waltering's research focuses on the hydrology of nature-based stormwater solutions, such as bioretention systems and swales. By combining field measurements, geophysical investigations and modelling, she examines how water infiltrates and moves through the soil, and how interactions between water, soil and vegetation influence the functioning of these systems.
Using time-lapse direct current resistivity tomography (DC-ERT), a non-invasive geophysical method that enables high-resolution, continuous monitoring, her research aims to provide new insights into infiltration dynamics and water–soil–plant interactions. This knowledge will contribute to improved design and long-term performance of nature-based stormwater solutions.
Nele holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and a master's degree with a specialisation in Water Management from the University of Rostock, Germany.
