MFA - Student
Microsoft Authenticator is only used to verify your identity when you log in, similar to BankID. The app takes up very little space on your phone and does not affect your other school apps or files.
If you do not want or are unable to install Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone, it is also possible to use an Authenticator on your computer or obtain a hardware token/YubiKey. However, the most convenient solution is to have the app on your mobile phone. More information can be found further down on this page.
To follow this guide you will need: A smartphone and/or a computer If you only have a smartphone, follow steps 1-3 and then go to the smartphone guide further down the page.
1. Install the app Microsoft Authenticator on your smartphone.

Resetting MFA
If you lose your phone or if it gets damaged, you can reset your MFA using the link below. Note, you may only reset your MFA with Swedish Bank id.
If you don’t have a smartphone
To use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), you normally need a mobile phone. If you don’t have access to a smartphone, there are other options:
- Use your computer
- You can also install an authenticator app directly on your own computer.
- Examples of apps that work are Google Authenticator or Bitwarden.
- Please note that LTU only provides instructions for Microsoft Authenticator.
If you choose another solution, you will need to follow that app’s own manuals.
- Use a hardware token/YubiKey
A hardware token or YubiKey is a small physical device (often shaped like a key or a small fob) that generates one-time codes you enter when logging in. As a student, you are responsible for obtaining one yourself if you want to use this method instead.- In Microsoft Authenticator, select a different method.
- Choose Hardware token.
- Enter the serial number.
- Follow our guides
- Our guides describe how to set up Microsoft Authenticator.
- If you are using another app, you can still follow the steps in general, but you will need to adapt them to the app you have chosen.
If you experience problems, you can always contact IT Support.
