Nordic countries
The Nordics - Nordplus
NORDPLUS is a scholarship program aimed at promoting the Nordic community. Cooperation within NORDPLUS is based on networks between universities/colleges in the Nordic region.
Luleå University of Technology participates in two networks:
- NORDTEK - a subject-based network for civil engineering programs. All technical colleges/universities in the Nordic region participate.
- NORDLYS - an interdisciplinary university network where 27 Nordic universities collaborate. NORDLYS is mainly aimed at those who want to study subjects other than those at their home university, interdisciplinary studies, especially in less internationalized subject areas.
Scholarship
For studies within NORDTEK or Nordlys you can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship (400-460 EUR/month) to cover additional costs during the exchange studies.
For the NORDPLUS scholarship, the following conditions apply
- You must have completed at least one year of studies at your home university before starting your studies at the host university. Priority is given to applicants who are at the end of their studies.
- the studies at the host university must be fully creditable in your degree from LTU.
- the studies must be full-time for at least 3 months up to one academic year.
- you must live in the place where the NORDPLUS studies are located.

Outside Europe
Here are opportunities to study outside Europe (EU)
Northern region - North2North
What is North2North?
North2North is an exchange program exclusively for students in the Northern Region between educational institutions located in this region.
If you apply and are nominated for an exchange place within the North2North program, you will receive a scholarship of approximately SEK 15 000 - 22 000 for travel and accommodation per semester.
How to apply for North2North
Applications are made online on the university's application portal for studies abroad. For a link to the application portal and general information about the application procedure, see the heading Application North2North Opens in new window..
Some important details to consider when making your application:
- In your online application, you have the possibility to make three preferences of country and university for exchange studies. A first, second and third choice. Please note that if you are applying for North2North, all three options must be within North2North. The countries open for application are USA, Canada and Russia. Which countries and which institutions are part of North2North can be found on the North2North website.
- In a later stage of the application under Statement of purpose, you write a justification for why you want to go to that particular country, the benefits of studying abroad and the connection of the planned studies to your education program.
- When applying for North2North, you do not need to include a learning agreement with your application.
ISEP - International Student Exchange Program
ISEP, International Student Exchange Program, is an American network in which LTU participates, which consists of two parts:
- US-International ISEP-Exchanges where university's students can apply for exchange places at American universities and which includes about 180 American universities. The network is interdisciplinary, which means that students from all the university's educational programs can apply.
Language test, TOEFL, may be a requirement at many of the universities, see ISEP's website for detailed information. - LTU is also part of the network International-to-International ISEP-Exchanges where LTU's students have the opportunity to apply for exchange places at universities around the world. There are about 40 countries to choose from, including Chile, Mexico, Korea, Japan and South Africa.
The ISEP network is interdisciplinary, everyone who studies at LTU and meets the basic criteria for participating in the student exchange, can apply for places in the program. ISEP is a good and cheap way to study a semester or a year at an American or other international university.
A basic principle of ISEP is that ISEP students create a place at their home university. This is done by having ISEP students pay the cost of a semester of study at the home university - for LTU students just over SEK 42,000 (subject to change) for a semester, to cover the cost of food and housing for an incoming ISEP student. An American ISEP student pays the corresponding costs as well as the tuition fee for an incoming ISEP student. The number of exchange places varies from year to year depending on how many ISEP students choose to study at LTU.
See ISEP's website to find out more about ISEP and which universities are available within the program.

How to apply for ISEP
The application is made online on the university's application portal for studies abroad. For a link to the application portal and general information about the application procedure see under the heading Application. Opens in new window.
As the ISEP application is somewhat different from other types of applications, below are some important details to consider when making your application.
In your online application, you have the possibility to make three preferences for the country of exchange studies. A first, second and third choice. Please note that you only select a country and not a specific university. Also note that if you are applying for ISEP, all three options should be within ISEP.
In the Mobility program field, select ISEP US for applications to the USA or ISEP I-to-I for applications to other parts of the world. In the next field, select the country.
As you cannot apply for a specific university, you should therefore select ISEP Country Name in the Institution / University field. For example, if you select the United States as your first country, you then select ISEP United States as your university. In the same way you do with your second choice where you might choose Japan and then select as university ISEP Japan and so on.
In a later step of the application under Statement of purpose, you write a justification for why you want to go to that particular country, the benefits of studying abroad and the connection of the planned studies to your education program.
When applying for ISEP, you do not need to submit a course proposal with your application.
The countries and institutions that are part of ISEP can be found on the ISEP website above.
English Language Requirements selection ISEP
The selection process is slightly different from that for "regular" exchange studies. In the case of ISEP, the sending university (LTU) is required to place greater emphasis on average grades, but other academic merits are also valued. If the application is for exchange in artistic education, these qualifications will also be evaluated.
After selection and possible interviews, a number of students will be selected to complete the real and more comprehensive ISEP application.
When LTU has reviewed the applications, we allocate the places that we at LTU have available within the program, and send out a nomination notice to the students who may use these places. Those who have not been nominated will be notified of this at the same time (usually mid-December).
You then say yes or no to your nomination.
Then an information meeting is held with the nominees to go through ISEP's own application (to "ISEP central" which makes the final placement of our students at the receiving university). A portfolio or audition CD should also be attached for artistic programs.
ISEP headquarters in Washington DC then handles the placements.
Once you have been placed at a US/international university, you must accept your placement in writing, pay for your insurance, make your final course selection and eventually apply for a visa.
If you are selected to do the real ISEP application, it means that you are virtually guaranteed a place (barring unforeseen circumstances) at a US/other ISEP university. However, there are no guarantees that you will end up at the university you applied to in the first place.
In the real ISEP application, you can list up to 10 universities where you would like to spend a semester or academic year (only ISEP member universities).
Please note that the processing time for an ISEP placement is long and that many universities in the US require the applicant to have taken the TOEFL. Study their website about language requirements carefully.
Costs
The basic idea of ISEP is that it should not cost more to study in another country than your home country. The cost is based on what it would have cost for the student to study at their home university. For a student from LTU, this means the cost of food and student housing for one semester.
You pay a lump sum, currently 42,000 SEK (low 2022/23 may be adjusted upwards due to rental costs) for one semester. This is equivalent to full-time tuition fees, food costs and accommodation for the entire semester at the US/international university, regardless of which university it is. This can be financed by student loans from CSN.
When the student arrives at the host university, food and accommodation are already paid for.
ISEP also charges a registration fee of currently US $355 which is included in the semester cost as well as the cost of a mandatory ISEP insurance (not included).

Overseas bilateral agreements
Luleå University of Technology has several bilateral exchange agreements with universities in North and South America, Australia, Asia and Mexico.
Common to exchanges with these universities is that the number of places is based on the number of incoming exchange students.
The number of places at universities outside Europe may vary from year to year. We who work with student exchanges usually have the number of places relatively clear at the turn of the year. When applying in the student portal, the number of places at each university is listed. If an agreement university is not listed in the portal, there are no exchange places there this year.
LTU students do not pay tuition fees at agreement schools.
Where can you go?
Below you can see the countries and partner universities where LTU has bilateral agreements for exchange studies. Please note that the agreements are evaluated and updated annually and we therefore reserve the right for changes and any errors. In the agreements below there are places for the coming application period.

Going on your own
If you prefer to go to a place other than those with which LTU has an exchange, it is possible to go on your own. Studying as a Free Mover generally involves a lot of work and it is required that you are out in good time, at least one year. If you study abroad as a Free Mover student, you apply for a study leave from LTU.
You yourself contact the university you want to study at for information on the application procedure, tuition fees, language tests, courses, course start, housing, etc. You have the opportunity to take the study funds with you provided that the education you want to apply for has so-called acceptable standards. Read more on the UHR website External link..
Things to consider
If you study part of your education abroad, and go outside the university's agreement area, you should find out in advance how you can use your studies in Sweden.
Check with your department if you can get your studies credited as part of your Swedish education. Do not forget to check that the university you intend to study at is approved according to your own country's criteria. Keep watch for universities that accept students at short notice!
The Swedish Higher Education Authority can help you find out the status of the university you are interested in abroad. After your studies, it is important that you can prove which courses have been included in your education abroad. You should compile as much documentation as possible about your studies.
Language studies
You may want to improve your language skills by taking a language course abroad. There is a wide range of options. Language courses are organized by both universities and private schools. Read more on the website of the Swedish Higher Education Authority External link, opens in new window..
There are also several organizations that provide language courses. It is possible to obtain study grants for language courses abroad. Check with CSN External link, opens in new window. about the rules that apply. From CSN you can get detailed information about study grants abroad and also order forms.
