Programme council
The programme council are an important part of the university’s quality assurance work. Through these councils, programmes are developed and improved.
Procedure for programme council
Purpose
Programme councils enable students to influence their education and contribute to its development and quality. High quality means a good learning environment where content, teaching, and resources function well.
Composition
There must be a programme council for each study programme. In exceptional cases, one council may cover several programmes. If a council covers more than one programme, one of the programme directors is appointed chair. That person assumes the responsibilities described below for programme directors.
A programme council should include the following members:
- Programme coordinator. The programme coordinator is responsible for leading the council’s work and convening meetings.
- Students. At least three students should participate in total. If possible, two or more students from each year group should be represented. The student unions are responsible for meeting the target of three students. If this is difficult, the programme director should contact the student representatives within the relevant section to discuss possible solutions.
- Teachers. The programme coordinatorselects which teachers are most relevant to invite to each meeting. At least two teacher representatives should attend. If this is difficult to achieve, the programme director should contact the head of education at the department to discuss possible solutions.
Depending on the nature of the programme and the issues discussed, it may also be appropriate to involve technical and administrative staff. External participants may also be invited to contribute ideas and perspectives (this is optional).
Tasks and responsibilities
- Quality development. The programme coordinator evaluates and contributes to improving educational quality through discussions and proposals on broader changes, such as programme content, teaching methods, assessment forms, and student support. The focus is not on details or specific elements of individual course instances. However, if certain courses are not considered relevant or do not function well over time, they should be discussed in the council.
- Student influence. The programme coordinator serves as a platform where students’ views and suggestions are presented, heard, and considered.
- Evaluation and analysis. The programme coordinator provides input to the faculty boards’ periodic evaluation of the programme every three years, particularly regarding the self-evaluation and analysis of quantitative data conducted by the programme coordinator.
Programme council meetings
Programme coordinator should meet regularly, with at least one meeting per semester. The chair is responsible for preparing the meeting agenda. Once finalised, the agenda is distributed to all members. The chair leads the discussions and ensures that minutes are recorded according to the established template.
You can find the procedures for programme councils in the university’s registry, case number LTU-5104-2023.
