COURSE SYLLABUS, third-cycle courses
Course name: TVM0032, Papers in Experimental and Fluid Mechanics (SE: Artiklar i Strömningslära och Experimentell Mekanik), 7.5 ECTS
ECTS: 7.5 ECTS
Course Code: TVM0032
Educational level: Third-cycle course
Entry requirements: Admitted to PhD studies at TVM
Implementation
This course is a hands-on course on the publication and presentation of scientific work. The course is divided into the three blocks; Structure of a scientific publication and management of research data, how to set up a reference bank and use references, and how to write a PhD-thesis, each of which gives 2.5 credits. The course consists of ten lectures/seminars in which the material is presented and discussed and/or examined. Between lectures, students are expected to do individual work and interact with their supervisors and fellow students for the best outcome of the course. Examination is performed orally through presentations and discussions of exercises performed during the event of the course.
Learning outcomes
You should practically know the basics of how to work as a scientist and how to interact with other scientists. You are expected to:
- Increase the knowledge about the content and structure of scientific papers and theses.
- Train the ability to define a research question.
- Train the capacity of reading and writing scientific papers.
- Obtain information about different journals and literature within fluid and experimental mechanics.
- Develop the ability to give short oral presentations and summaries as well as to lead discussions.
- Obtain a list of important references within your research area.
- Produce a summary describing previous work done in the research area.
- A first training in writing and managing a scientific paper.
- A first training in how to publish research data.
Course content/Lectures
- Introduction
Introduction to scientific publishing. Different journals used at the division and their differences are shown. The basic structure of an article and how to use references is discussed. What is the difference between different types of publications? Presentation of homework.
- Seminar 1
Structure and content of scientific publications. Presentations and discussions.
- Reference bank
How to create a dynamic reference bank. The student is expected to communicate with their supervisors and other collaborators to follow up on progress and to straighten out any question marks.
- Presentations
How to structure a presentation. Which parts should be included and how to keep a red thread through the presentation.
- Seminar 2 ++
Each student gives an oral presentation about the state-of-art within their research topic and who the leading experts are. Feedback is given. Depending on student participation, this may be executed on several occasions. Part of the examination.
- Seminar 3 ++
Each student presents their updated presentation. Depending on student participation, this may be executed on several occasions. Part of the examination.
- Workshop
A deeper analysis of the structure of a paper and how different parts are connected. Introduction of objectives.
- Research data
Managing publication of data. How, where and when do you publish data? Introduction of objectives.
- PhD thesis
Different types of PhD theses are shown and the structure is discussed. Introduction of objectives and examination.
- Seminar 4 ++
The evaluation of the thesis introduction performed is discussed in a dissertation-like manner. Supervisors will be engaged. May be executed on several occasions
Examination
Part I: Reference bank created and summarized in an approved oral presentation, 2.5 credits.
