They move their research to the municipalities

Published: 31 August 2017

Luleå University of Technology’s Catrine Kostenius and Ulrika Bergmark have been appointed to ”Flexit researchers”, which means that they will move their research from the university to organisations outside the academia.

Flexit is a project funded by The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond) that seeks new, flexible solutions designed to spread research and researchers outside higher education institutions.

This summer, The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences announced five new Flexit positions. Two of the five positions went to researchers at Luleå University of Technology:

Catrine Kostenius, Professor of Health Science, will conduct her research about health promotional work among children in cooperation with Norrbottens Kommuner, an organisation representing the country's 14 northernmost municipalities.

Ulrika Bergmark, Associate Professor of Education, will work with the education administration in Piteå Municipality to integrate research into school education.

Establish new contacts

– One purpose of the Flexit project is to build bridges between universities and the surrounding community. Other actors in the society can increase their knowledge of what the academia can contribute with, and researchers at the universities can establish new contacts, says Catrine Kostenius, who has long experience of health promotional with children.

One specific question she, as a Flexit researcher, will focus on is the how the health appointments held by shool nurses can be developed.

As a Flexit researcher, Ulrika Bergmark says she will deepen her collaboration with teachers, school leaders and other municipal representatives in Piteå.

– I will support the teachers in their work to get research into classrooms, but will also work with the issue at strategic level, says Ulrika Bergmark.
