Träslaget 2013 - wood activities for high school students
600 high school students in grade 8, from schools in Skellefteå, Malå and Norsjö, visited LTU in Skellefteå for Träslaget 2013. The activities were divided into two parts: research and a knowledge test. An extra task was about making a music video with the theme "Wood you rock".
– We want to show that technology is fun, says Olof Broman senior lecturer at the Division of Wood Science and Engineering at LTU, and responsible for Träslaget 2013. Students meet doctoral students, undergraduate students, professors and lecturers from several countries. By showcasing LTU:s research in wood, we want to create an interest in science, technology, and for further studies and of course also for the material wood.
– Since the Skellefteå region is a leader in wood, both in terms of research and industrial development, we want to show the unique opportunities of wood material, says Olof Broman.
There was a great interest for this year's Träslaget 2013 among schools. The activities started in 2009 and for the second occasion in 2011 Träslaget was extended to two days because of the great interest. Each school participates for one day. The classes that are involved can win SEK 3000 per category, and a maximum of SEK 9000.
Träslaget is a collaboration between LTU in Skellefteå and the wood industry through the foundation Träenigheten and Teknikvännerna. The initiative is founded by EU and intends to awaken students interest in wood research and education programmes that focus on science, technology and wood.
