Students meet the IT industry in Skelleftea

More than 100 students from computer-based programmes attended "Möjligheternas day" when the IT industry in Skellefteå invited to company visits and MerIT gala. The IT industry in Skellefteå need more skilled employees, says Dataföreningens Leif Häggmark. Organizers of the event was Dataföreningen, LTU Skellefteå, Umeå University in Skellefteå and Skellefteå Municipality.

- Besides Stockholm, Skellefteå is the city in Sweden that has the most IT-people per capita. If we are interested in keeping our position it is important that we continue to attract IT expertise to our town, says Leif Häggmark.

All grades are invited each year, which gives student involved several opportunities to get an excellent view of IT companies in Skellefteå.  We see an increasing interest in Skellefteå and several students move to Skellefteå each year after graduation to work in the IT industry.  As so many students signed up for this year's "Möjligheternas Day" indicates an increasing interest which is what the industry needs, says Leif Häggmark.

High school students are also invited to parts of the day to see  the possibilities in an IT career.


After lunch the university students went by bus to their  three choosen companies. They could choose among: Consultec , Data Ductus , DataPolarna , Evry , Explizit , NUITEQ , North Kingdom , Skellefteå Municipality's IT department, Skellefteå Kraft , TietoEnator , Visma , Voxit .

Skellefteå Kraft has for many years supported the development of ICT in Skelleftea. They have both participated in and co-sponsored different research and  development projects. The company has also put a lot of effort in highlighting Skelleftea as an attractive place for business establishments.

- An example of our research is measuring power quality. This work is done together with Luleå University of Technology, says Torbjörn Lindholm, Head of IT, Skellefteå Kraft.


Best thesis of the year

A check of 10,000 SEK for "The Best thesis of the year" went to Cajsa-Tora Hermansson. Her supervisor was Dan Johansson at LTU Skellefteå and the work is about applications for mobile phones.
