Published: 29 September 2015

The Department of Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology were visited by, among others, Sven-Erik Bucht, the Minister of Rural Affairs. During the visit, the research in wood science and engineering were presented, and the need for future investments in wood research and education were discussed.

The visitors were shown the Älvsbacka bridge, a wooden bridge which is part of the investment in new wood structures that will profile Skellefteå as a wood town. Then the University's premises in Skellefteå were shown, and the need for future investment in wood mechanics and wood structures at SP and at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå were discussed. Sven-Erik Bucht also learned more about the reserach in x-ray and tomography of logs that started in 1986 and has resulted in world-unique expertise in the area.

The visit ended with a dialogue about ideas concerning a center for wood-related industrial education and the need for an industry-related research programme, with the aim of developing one of Sweden's most important basic industries.
