High-level meetings in focus

Published: 7 September 2022

Now we are already in the month of September and all students are finally in place at our campus locations. It's back to full speed and I'm looking forward to an exciting autumn. Lately, there has been a focus on high-level meetings with our strategic partners.

At the end of August, we visited Hitachi Energy in Västerås. There, among other things, we got to take part in the research that is being conducted in the field of electrification. There is also great interest in research collaboration in other areas such as materials science, AI and robotics.

We also discussed talent management, how we can work together with student recruitment and increasing contact between the students and Hitachi Energy. We agreed to work for more thesis projects and collaborations with our educations, through, for example, lectures in courses and development of educations. Among other things, Hitachi will offer students study visits and the opportunity to apply for summer jobs and trainee positions.

At a high-level meeting with the Swedish Forest Industries, we discussed the industrialization boom taking place in the north and the importance of sustainable construction. It is a big challenge, but an important part of the sustainable transition. During the visit, the university presented parts of our business that are closely connected to the forest, forest raw materials and industrial construction. Among other things, we visited the labs at Wood and Bionanocomposites. There, professor Kristiina Oksman spoke about "The material of the future from forest raw materials" and showed, among other things, biochar as an electrode material. In the lab at Energy Engineering, Marcus Öhman and some of his colleagues talked about the research they are conducting in biofuel technology and energy-efficient use in industry and society. The visits to the lab were very much appreciated by our guests.

Also in the meeting with the Swedish Forest Industries, talent management was an important issue on the agenda. We talked, among other things, about the importance the transition study support will have for this industry and agreed to continue the work around this.

This week we have partly a high-level meeting with Boliden, partly a joint meeting with three of our collaboration partners – Boliden, LKAB and Epiroc – to see if it gives additional advantages to gather partners with obvious connections to each other in one and the same meeting. If it is successful, we will continue with joint meetings at least once a year in different constellations and with different purposes.

On Thursday we have our big staff and student party where we celebrate 50 years as a university. Hope to see you in the crowd!

Greetings,
Birgitta
