Published: 1 September 2015

It's about student accommodation with hotel standards, at the Hotel Nordkalotten. There are Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, student unions and Tobias Lindfors, President of Student Consulting and the new owner of the Hotel Arctic that made this common solution.

–Now, students can devote time to studying and avoid spending energy on chasing unconvenient temporary accommodations. This is a good, temporary accommodation. But we will continue to work for more permanent solutions, says Carl Johan Granqvist, Chairman of Luleå Student Union.

Occupancy September 1, 2015

Hotel Nordkalotten makes 125 double rooms with single beds available to university students. It will provide 250 students temporary housing for two years. Occupancy can be done this evening, September 1st. At 16:30 busses depart from the university for a first tour of the rooms. Anyone interested can sign a contract on the spot.

A prerequisite for this solution is an agreement between Luleå University of Technology and Luleå city, is a shared responsibility. Both parties enter with 2 million each per year in the project. The university rents the rooms to the students who primarily are intended for temporary accommodation for the first year.

Luleå University of Technology, this means that the settlement of temporary accommodation in hostels, where students often have to share a room with several others, will be winded up

- I am happy and grateful that today we can announce this agreement. Lack of student housing should not be a reason why young people not choose Luleå. Access to capital or wealthy parents must not be a criterion for eligibility for higher studies. This joint solution also shows that there is a broad consensus in the region of the importance of a well functioning university and a strong belief in the university's ability to attract students from all over Sweden to Luleå and Norrbotten, says John Sterte, Vice Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.

Students pay 3600 per month for 10 months including electricity and broadband. During the summer months returning students place in the regular hotel business. There is access to a big kitchen and laundry, bath and gym. There are conference rooms where they can study and they get student preferential prices on breakfast and dinner. Additionally, there are lighted trails for walking and running.  Logistics between Luleå University of Technology and the hotel is by direct bus rides, line four, that will be expanded with additional tours. At the hotel there is also a free car park.

- We are pleased with this solution and it is a result of good cooperation between the university, the municipality and the business community. Just two weeks ago we were approached by Tobias Lindfors in this matter, so it has gone quickly, says Niklas Nordström, Mayor of Lulea.

- This is a great temporary solution, but we want more permanent house will be built near the campus at Porsön, says Simon Persson, teknologkårens chairman.

In terms of student housing in the near future, during the fall of 2016, there will be the fall 145 new student housing on the campus and in autumn 2017 a further 145 homes. The university is planning further 250 student housing on the campus of the University houses that the owners and managers.
