Aviation safety requires effective maintenance

Published: 3 June 2015

Luleå University of Technology hosts the multi-conference ICRESH-ARMS this week. About 100 participants from 15 countries with focus on air, rail, mining and energy are here to participate. Reliable services in maintenance are required when it comes to the aerospace industry which deals with complex technical systems in an extremely competitive environment.

- When you are working with complex technical systems in an extremely competitive situation, as in aviation for example, necessary services for the operation and maintenance that can be trusted is a must, otherwise there could be a risk of accidents and damage to the environment, among other things. Therefore, one must produce useful and effective requirements for maintenance and that is exactly what our research is focued on says Professor Uday Kumar at Luleå University of Technology.

Research focused on the aviation industry is one of several topics addressed during the international conference. ICRESH, "International Conference of Reliability engineering and Safety Hazards",is one part of the conference and also an Indian initiative. The second part is brand new and is led by Luleå University of Technology "Advances in Reliability, Maintenance and Safety" (ARMS). It is also supported by the Swedish Transport Administration and Vattenfall and Luleå Railway Research Center (JVTC) at the University. The goal is for it to become the best academic industry conference in Europe.

- There are a lot of other conferences and they are all focused on the academic sphere, but we want more focus on applied research and how we can benefit the industry and contribute to society, says Alireza Ahmadi, Assistant Professor in the Department of operation and maintenance at Luleå University of Technology.
