In the subarctic climate in Kiruna, with bright summers and dark winters, and temperatures down to 40 degrees Celsius, both creative and innovative ideas for things to work. The building Seventh House is equipped with measuring instruments during the two years when the house is inhabited, to analyze the performance and technical solutions.
– The house is partially self-sufficient residential electricity using solar cells and energy efficient outdoor lighting that lights up the dark winter nights, says Jutta Schade, Division of Structural and Construction Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
The water and sewage is buried 72 cm below ground and heated by the nearby district heating network.
– The frost-free depth is 3 meters in Kiruna and this is a challenge. To reduce water consumption and minimize energy consumption for hot water, a shower cabin with heat recovery and water - a so-called "NASA shower". It saves 90% water and 80% energy, says Jutta Schade.
The water that flows into the floor drain is collected, purified and pumped back. Thus, the same water använders again and again. The internal treatment plant is a filter that attracts particles, bacteria and viruses. The water is flushed out completely when you've showered ready. Only 5 liters of water consumed during a 10-minute shower.
The semidetached house Seventh House is based on NCC's earlier conceptual house The cube, which has been upgraded to a passive house. NCC estimates that the development and production cost is around 70 percent higher than for a normal Kubenhus. The house in Kiruna has cost about 9 million but the relatively high cost justified by the fact this is product development at NCC.
The Building of the Year in 2015 is the sector's most prestigious competition. It highlights examples of the best performing sector in quality, cooperation in the project, economics and shape. The price is a collaboration between the newspaper building industry and the Swedish Building. The award will be March 23 at a gala in Stockholm.
