It is Dataföreningen Norrbotten that appoints Årets IT-Norrbottning. Peter Parnes is rewarded for his work to make young people interested in technology.
– I have put a lot of volunteer work down arranging workshops and seminars and founded Luleå Maker Space with the direct aim at promoting interest in technology. That's probably why I get this award, my strong drive to get young people to become interested in technology as well as efforts to get more girls into the IT sector in general.
Digitisation at school
Through his work at Luleå University of Technology, Peter Parnes has worked a lot with digitisation of primary school. The goal is for the school to become more modern and teach for a modern society.
– To get more young girls interested in technology and IT specifically, we need to change the attitudes in society. It's not just guys that "must" act within this important area, girls are also needed, says Peter Parnes.
What challenges do Norrbotten face in the IT field?
– When it comes to digitisation in school, all schools need to get engaged so we can jointly raise the region. Several municipalities in Norrbotten are already well advanced, but much more can be done. And I am convinced that it will be done quicker if we work together. And Luleå University of Technology plays a central role in doing this.
