Record high interest for Primary Education, in early years classes of the compulsory school

The number of first-time applicants for Primary Education, in early years classes of the compulsory school, at Luleå University of Technology sets new record. Not in years, has interest been so great for these educations, which is now provided remotely.

A full 87 percent of the first-time applicants come from Norrbotten, Västerbotten and Västernorrland.

- Many applications are submitted at the last minute, so I'm sure we will get yet more applicants. We are of course very happy because we really need to get more teachers in the region. The teaching profession is a shortage occupation, says Cathrine Norberg, Associate Professor and chair of Philosophy Faculty at Luleå University of Technology, where teacher education belongs.

The number of first-time applicants to an education can be said to be a kind of measure of the popularity of a university education in one area. Preliminary figures now show that the number of first-choice applicants to Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in early years classes and grades 1-3 and 4-6 of the compulsory school at Luleå University of Technology, is the highest in several years. There is one week left until the deadline.

Record interest

Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in early years classes and grades 1-3 of the compulsory school, now have 79 first-time applicants and 240 total. Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in grades 4-6 of the compulsory school, now have 44 first-time applicants and 156 total. Compared with the autumn term 2014, it is big difference. By then, 48 people by those who were admitted to Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in early years classes and grades 1-3 of the compulsory school at Luleå University of Technology, had it as the first choice. Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in grades 4-6 of the compulsory school in autumn 2014, 29 of the adopted, had it as their first choice.

Autumn 2015 these educations are provided remotely for the first time at Luleå University of Technology. Bachelor programme in Early Years Education, has been provided both at remotely and on campus in Luleå for several years. Several courses in Health Sciences at Luleå University of Technology are provided remotely today.

- The course has the same content and the same requirements whether rendered remotely or not, and we have good experience in education given remotely. An education that is interesting to compare with, is Bachelor Programme in Occupational Therapy at Luleå University provided remotelye, which that was the only one of its kind in Sweden who received the highest rating, very high quality of the Swedish Higher Education Authority in their evaluation of the quality of education, says Cathrine Norberg.

Representatives of Initial and advanced training at Luleå University of Technology are positive to the great interest.

- It's amazing positive that so many want to be because teachers and that Luleå University of Technology is their first choice. In our Master programme in Primary Education, teaching in early years classes and grades 1-3 and 4-6,  we offer students a particularly strong expertise when it comes to educating future teachers parallel in subject knowledge, methodology and pedagogy, says Maria Johansson, PhD in Mathematics and Mathematics and learning at Luleå University of Technology.
