Educating for the world's leading symphony orchestras

Published: 16 March 2015

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra / Stockholm Concert Hall and School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology, make a unique venture in Scandinavia. It's about a post-graduate specialist training RSPO Orchestra Academy for young very talented musicians.

– The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is included in the top tier of international orchestras and we see with increasing concern the difficulties for young musicians to get a job in our orchestras. It is increasingly common that those already installed in other orchestras wins auditions advertised. This creates a closed loop that young talented musicians do not enter - they simply lack enough orchestral experience. That, we now want to change by the RSPO Orchestra Academy, says, Stefan Forsberg, director of the Concert Hall.

Under the leadership of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic's principals and the School of Music in Piteå, students who are admitted to the RSPO Orchestra Academy, will be drilled every week. Students receive including individual instruction on their instrument, extensive chamber music playing, teaching in the auditions and the opportunity to participate in 8-12 concert productions with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of world-renowned conductors.

Berlin Philharmonic model

The aim is that these promising young music students in the years to come conquer the vacancies advertised by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and in other symphony orchestras in the world.

- We see this as the best possible investment for the future of classical music, says Stefan Forsberg.

The model for training activities include those conducted by the Berlin Philharmonic in their recognized academic training Orchester-Akademie.

- It is fantastic that we start this training cooperation with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, a symphony orchestra of the highest international quality. It shows the top quality we as a university offer in courses in music, says John Sterte, Vice Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.

Master classes of high level

For several years, the School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology worked with different ideas about creating an orchestral training. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra had also plans for an orchestral academy. It seemed only natural to begin talks on cooperation.

- We have for a long time conducted master classes at a high international level, and worked closely with a number of musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Personally, I have over the years frequently visited the orchestra as a conductor. It seemed natural to cooperate, says Petter Sundkvist, professor of musical arts at the School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology and examiner for the RSPO Orchestra Academy.
