Rock support and deep mining in focus at conference

Published: 7 September 2016

The hunt for metals and minerals mining is developing towards deeper mines. New technological advances are enabling this development. The September 12 to 14 gathered about 200 scientists from all continents to share their knowledge in this area.

The International Conference for rock reinforcement "Ground Support 2016" - 8th International Symposium on Ground Support in Mining and Underground Construction "held at the House of Culture in Lulea.

"Most of the presentations about ground support in tunnelling focus on weak rock conditions. The presentations about ground support in mines, focuses on deep mining conditions, i.e., large deformations and seismic conditions. Specifically the development, testing and simulation of ground support elements/systems for mining at great depth are covered by the presentations, says Erling Nordlund, Professor of Mining and Rock Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Organizer of Ground Support 2016 - the 8th International Symposium on Ground Support in Mining and Underground Construction - is the research group in Mining and Geotechnical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
