Published: 28 January 2016

Sten Brand donates 7 MSEK, to earlier invested 11.5 MSEK, to the foundation Rut and Sten Brands fund that aims to strengthen the research and education in mining engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

– Sten Brands' donation of seven million means a lot for our education and research in the mining area. Sten's involvement is valuable for us, he takes part in our celebrations and events and is a very good friend of the university. He contributes to the developments in mining, says Vice-Chancellor Johan Sterte at Luleå University of Technology.

Travel scholarships for female researchers and students

Erling Nordlund is Chair Professor in Mining and Rock Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. He is of course very happy for the donation from Sten Brand.

- The Rut and Sten Brand fund has been very important for us. The fund provides an annual subsidy to a position in Mining and Rock Engineering. In the first year it partly financed a new professorship for Savka Dineva who is an expert in seismic events which occurs in mining at great depths. Thanks to the support from, among others, Rut and Sten Brands Fund and LKAB, has enabled us to expand our business and hire more senior researchers. Additionally, the fund has invested in a travel scholarship for female students and researchers, the Rut travel grant, says Erling Nordlund.

The foundation Rut and Sten Brands Fund was set up in 1997 to promote mining and rock engineering at Luleå University of Technology. A total of 18.5 MSEK has been donated by Mr and Mrs Brand. The Foundation has awarded grants and the support of just over six MSEK.

Sten Brand, who recently turned 95, has a long background in the mining industry and was among other things responsible for the supervision of the working environment in Norrbotten mines between 1974 and 1987. After his retirement in 1987, Sten Brand became more and more involved with the University, and held courses in minerals engineering. Rut Brand, the initiator of the fund, passaed away in 2009.
