- Today we know that teaching based on art forms has a very big impact on children's learning and that there is a strong link between art and children's reading and writing development. Creating a good learning environment helps students feel lust and motivation in school work, says Märtha Andersson, Senior Lecturer at Luleå University of Technology.
Reaches a deeper knowledge
In the project, four middle class classes participated in which three of the classes were assigned to create a fictional civilization in an Arctic climate and a class in a tropical climate.
- The students are hired as experts and amateur archaeologists. The role of educators is to create the conditions for the group to interact as experts in order to gain a deeper understanding of the living conditions that are required for flora, fauna and humans in this fantasy world, says Märtha Andersson.
The civilizations that the children imagined had many similarities, but there were also differences.
- The family formation was organized as large families with great openness. An interesting aspect was that the dads stayed home with the children while the mothers went around the villages and provided new children. Thus, civilizations grew stronger. Hunting and fishing were central to both the Arctic and tropical civilizations, and everyone agreed that all decisions should be taken democratically. However, a difference was that the children who worked with tropical civilization were more focused on facts while the groups in the Arctic environments were more free in mind. I understand that they could identify more with an arctic environment because of their own experiences and growing environment, says Märtha Andersson.
Difficult to measure
Working with aesthetic learning processes governed by the children's own creation has gained an increasingly undisclosed role in the schools in recent decades. Märtha Andersson believes that the imagery of aesthetic learning as profound and the difficulty of measuring the results is the basis for this development.
- Many teachers express an uncertainty for aesthetic learning processes and therefore choose not to use this in their teaching. However, research shows that through aesthetic learning processes, students transform information into personal knowledge through a creative and creative approach in which the theoretical knowledge integrates with the practical. A knowledge that not only stays within the school's walls but which they then bring in and circulate in other contexts. It's something that at least I do not think is fluffy.
