– The joint investment is an important step towards ensuring high quality in teacher education and it gives the region opportunity to remain at the forefront. We must work together if we want to succeed in increasing the attractiveness of the teaching profession and ensuring regional competence, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
The partners want to give at least eight PhD students the possibility to do research close to the activities in school. It will be included as a research supplementary in the teacher education and the aim is to ensure the scientific competence that is a prerequisite for the quality of the education. The PhD students will parallel with their research, also work with school development, investigations and teaching, and active teachers will be given the opportunity to develop their skills.
For the schools it is important that there is strong and sustainable teacher education in the region that contributes to the provision of teachers and also the development of the school, says Monica Johansson, Head of Department of Arts, Communication and Education at Luleå University of Technology.
– The research school is a powerful but also necessary initiative that we do together. In addition to strengthening teacher education at Luleå University of Technology, it will also serve as a hub for collaboration between academia and school, says Monica Johansson.
The cost of the research school is estimated to SEK 44 million over a five-year period. Luleå University of Technology accounts for 50 per cent, 25 per cent region of Norrbotten and 25 per cent from the municipalities together.
