Published: 17 September 2019

Piteå municipality and Luleå University of Technology, have adopted a joint declaration of intent, which will strengthen both the municipality's development and the university's activities, with regard to education and skills development, research and innovation, as well as experimental environments and centers of expertise.

– We are very pleased with this collaboration and hope that it will increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of both Piteå Municipality and Luleå University of Technology. Piteå is the first of our university locations, with which we write a letter of intent. We have started the work and intend to do the same with Luleå, Kiruna and Skellefteå municipalities, Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, says, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.

Each year, Piteå's municipal management and Luleå Technical University Management will discuss future issues and activites to reach them. The activities will lead to increased quality in skills development and lifelong learning as well as in research and innovation - with the goals of sustainable growth and increased competitiveness for both parties. Piteå municipality and the university will also work for more extensive strategic investments in development environments for technology and entrepreneurship, with the aim of strengthening the regional innovation system and regional and national business.

– The presence and activities of Luleå University of Technology in Piteå have been crucial for the municipality's development in recent decades. This development has occurred in good and close cooperation between the university and the municipality. With the agreement, we show that we want to jointly continue that journey, within the cultural area as well as the more technology- and community-oriented collaborations we already have, Anders Lundkvist, says municipal council in Piteå.

The letter of intent states that Piteå will develop into an attractive university city, with the aim of attracting students, teachers and researchers with excellence to Luleå University of Technology. The collaboration will be characterized by sustainability and long-term perspective where the municipality in the planning of new housing / student housing, workplaces, community service, infrastructure and other things does this in dialogue with the needs and wishes of students and universities. The University's activities in Piteå form a central part of Luleå University's artistic education and research, with a focus on music and musical design. The parties will also explore areas of cooperation, which can be of great importance for the municipality and the region's business and structural transformation.

– The activities that we jointly decide on will lead to increased quality in skills development and lifelong learning, as well as in research and innovation - and be of benefit to society, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
