Best innovation from Luleå researchers

The Predictive Movement project has won first prize in Datadriven innovationstävling för pakettjänster och transporter i Sveriges gles- och landsbygder.

– I think I have said "we won" 2 378 times since yesterday. And from the rest of the team, I have seen happy posts on many different social media, says Johanna Lindberg, PhD student in Information Systems and project leader at Luleå University of Technology.

What is Predictive Movement ?

– Predictive Movement (PM) aims to create a digital platform that becomes a collaborative space for the transport of people and goods with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). In the first stage, the project will solve the societal challenge with parcel deliveries in rural areas. Later on, the project aims to optimize accessibility  in everything from metropolitan environments to rural areas. PM is a project funded by, among others, Vinnova and the Swedish Transport Administration. The project includes one region, four municipalities, a university, authorities and actors in digitization and traffic and logistics. An important driving force in the project is the climate issue and reducing emissions from road traffic.

What problem does the project want to solve?

– Today, traffic movements are optimized based on the benefits to society instead of being sub-optimized based on the needs of individual transport service companies. This is because the actors in the traffic do not cooperate. Predictive Movement offers collaboration where it does not exist today. If we achieve collaboration in the transport system, more people will have access to the transports and they will be made more efficient. The result will be, among other things, that the roads are better used, better accessibility in the countryside and reduced congestion in the big cities. And most important of all: we get a better environment with reduced emissions.

And what does your solution look like?

– Predictive Movement collects data from physical transport infrastructure. An app is connected to PM via open APIs and data is shared about trips that are planned and performed. Thanks to PM, it is possible to choose freely when a transport service is to be purchased, through, for example, service companies that coordinate and sell travel that others provide. We believe that the information coming from PM can be used by various players in the transport services market, either for their own planning or in apps where they sell their services to the consumer. The platform can provide private individuals with important knowledge before their own travels, via navigation services or new sharing service applications that do not exist today.
