“The students are taught by teachers who have environmental policy as their absolute area of expertise”, says Simon Matti, professor and teacher of political science at Luleå University of Technology.
The solution to our environmental problems is far from purely technical. An understanding of the guiding principles that shape environmental policy is crucial for achieving set goals. It is people who make decisions and therefore there is also a need for social scientists who can contribute to an environmental change. This new focus in political science studies, among other things, the conditions of environmental policy and why some international environmental collaborations are successful while others are less so. Political goals, goal conflicts, actors, strategies and implementation at global, national and local level are analyzed.
Good grades for political science
The political science research at Luleå University of Technology was recently given a very good grade by the Swedish Research Council. The research stands well compared to the larger universities.
“I expect that our students in the new focus course will be in-demand experts in municipalities, county administrative boards, authorities and interest groups, but also in business”, says Annica Sandström, professor and teacher in political science at Luleå University of Technology
The focus course is based on political science research in the subject, but also includes perspectives and insights from other social science disciplines, including economics, law and history. Since the life-sustaining environment itself is a prerequisite for environmental policy, an element about the basic ecological processes is also included in the educational focus. Carina Lundmark is assistant professor of political science at Luleå University of Technology and educational leader for the new focus course.
“Environmental policy is linked to human welfare and survival. It is important to be able to combine different political goals; ecological, social and economic sustainability are linked to each other. The area is not only important but also very exciting”, she says.
