Luleå University of Technology celebrates democracy

On January 26, 100 years ago, Sweden made a major and revolutionary constitutional change, that women in Sweden would receive the right to vote in direct elections to the Riksdag on the same terms as men. We want at Luleå University of Technology want to draw attention to this giant stride forward.

On January 26, 100 years ago was an important breakthrough for democracy. That is why Luleå University of Technology is flagging. It was the first time women in Sweden were allowed to vote in the Riksdag and the first time that women were elected to the Riksdag.

Questions about democracy and people's equal value and rights are important issues for Luleå University of Technology. They permeate the university's vision and are important for all education and research

– Democracy is not a state, it is a process, the American election with its aftermath has shown that. So we must never settle down and believe that we are ready, that we no longer need to fight and defend our democratic societies, says Birgitta Bergvall Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.

January 27, the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in Sweden, is also the official start to Luleå University of Technology's 50th anniversary, which is celebrated throughout the year, a very good start.
