The Swedish Geotechnical Society's award for best degree project 2020

Published: 11 October 2021

Adam Sjödin, who studied the civil engineering program at Luleå University of Technology, was awarded the Swedish Geotechnical Society's prize for best degree project in 2020.

"The work was clearly the best of the nominees and there was never any major discussion in the jury about who would get the nomination. This indicates quality," says Sven Knutsson, professor in Soil Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology.

The best degree project is selected based on the following criteria

  • relevance to SGF's purpose / purpose
  • linguistic design,
  • technical content and
  • presentation technique.

All nominated entries were presented this year at a webinar on October 6, 2021 and the prize jury was able to present the winner today:

With the following motivation, the prize went to Adam Sjödin from Luleå University of Technology for "Numerical modeling of deformations and pore pressure in an experimental pond Comparison between in-site measurements and FE simulations in PLAXIS 2D"

Motivation

The degree project is structured with a clearly described goal. The report is well written and the work very ambitious.

The work includes complex finite element calculations in which Adam shows a great understanding of the model and the importance of input data. Adam also formulates well-founded motives for the choices made. The results, and underlying analyzes, are presenting with a clear description of selected observations. The work compares numerical results with the measured values of reality from the physical construction.

The presentation is well implemented through its pedagogical approach and focused feedback on the work's issues.

Supervisor for the degree project was Jasmina Toromanovic, research assistant in Soil Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology.
