Get a diploma in laser cutting with a certificate from the European Welding Federation

About the course

The course gives you good theoretical and practical knowledge of laser cutting, but also an overview of other laser processing methods. According to many experts, laser cutting is an indispensable fast and flexible method and suits many materials and different production environments. The European Welding Federation, EWF, has developed an independent special program in laser cutting that Luleå University of Technology now offers as a course in Swedish. An international diploma, the EWF diploma, guarantees education of the highest quality.

The course contains a theoretical part and a practical part.

Theoretical part:
Industrial lasers and their function, Radiation propagation and laser optics, The laser cutting process, Systems, Materials and their cutability, Characteristics of cut surfaces, Design for laser cutting, Quality assurance and laser safety. (Total 18 hours)

Practical part:
Process parameters and their effect on fiber and Nd: YAG laser cutting in different materials. (Total 4 hours and 4 hours of homework)


The course is conducted on two occasions in 2-3 days over a two-month period. Theory and practical elements are combined and work together to achieve the best learning. The examination includes a three-hour written knowledge check and an approved laboratory report. Passed students receive an EWF diploma (ELC) as a course certificate.


The course coordinator is Jan Frostevarg, assistant professor of production development at Luleå University of Technology. Jan has extensive experience of laser welding and has published several scientific articles in the field. Other teachers in the course are, for example, Alexander Kaplan, Jörg Volpp and Tore Silver, who also have extensive experience in laser welding.
