Applied Computer Security

This course will give a narrow, but in-depth, focus on computer security architecture in terms of its technologies, functions, and usage.

About the course:

During the course, students work on assignments individually and in groups. For the group activities, the students collaborate with each other using different tools. The course material covers basic concepts, norms and functions in computer security as well as their significance and scope. Students can study and apply security concepts in the design of solutions to achieve computer security. In order to be able to design suitable security solutions, students must first acquire knowledge of current solutions through research. Students will also learn about the role of computer security in organizations' IT infrastructure.

The lectures cover analysis and design of computer security now and in the future, security concepts, research techniques, and how computer security should be integrated into an organization's security policy.

Teaching is in English.

The student platform Canvas is used to download course materials, information and submissions. Knowledge is shared and created during the course through virtual meetings with teachers and other students for discussion, supervision, group work and seminars.

Course content:

The course covers basic concepts, standards and functions, as well as applications in computer security. The course consists of content related to various aspects of computer security, such as user authentication, security for operating systems, malware and data encryption, with applications for organizational security. The course has a narrow but in-depth focus on computer security architecture with regard to technology, function and use. The current technology is treated from a practical point of view, so that students can learn to analyze and design security solutions within the framework of an organization. Different situations and security concepts are covered so that students can learn to apply the right security solutions for computers. The current academic and theoretical development is also covered, to help students understand what new functions may arise in the future. The course also studies how to do research to find current solutions and predict future developments.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify and explain basic concepts, standards, meanings and functions in the field of computer security.
  • Make an overview of academic currents and knowledge development in computer security.
  • Analyze an architecture for computer security within the framework of an organization.
  • Design a model for computer security in accordance with an organization's requirements.
  • Decide on plans and routines for computer security in accordance with an organization's security policy.
