Premiere night for research effort

Luleå University of Technology's commitment to visualizing the artistic research to a broad public had a grand premiere on Friday night. The venture under the name The University presents offered everything from folk music and blues rock to organ praeludium.

- This is a milestone in the history of the music academy. It is an opportunity to showcase the activities in the artistic area for the public, and show what we actually do here. The investment is long-awaited and it is very positive that it is now running. Now we look forward to the whole autumn's program, said Monica Johansson, Head of Department of Art, Communication and Learning.

Unique environment

The University presents in Piteå is an initiative to communicate more clearly the artistic development work and the artistic research currently under way at the university. Jan Sandström, professor at Luleå University of Technology and successful composer, has participated in the music academy's journey almost from day one and emphasized the importance of visualizing the activities currently underway at the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology.

- It's easy to forget how important it is to have such a environment in Norrbotten. Looking at a map of where Sweden's other music colleges are, you can see that Musikhögskolan is a unique environment north of Dalälven. I think that gives a good picture of how important it is to work up here, said Jan Sandström.

The journey is the goal

Artistic research is a relatively new field of research and Jan Sandström believes that it must be clear and establish that also the artistic research environment is an obvious part of the academic world.

- Artistic research is a fairly new concept, not least in northern Sweden, but as a composer I can say that what happens during the creation process is actually research. You have a starting point but during the trip, things happen, and it's just the same phenomenon as other research. You can never decide what you're up to in advance, but it's the road there that is interesting.

During the weekend, the audience could also take part in Erik Westberg's Vocal Ensemble and the children's theater Den manickfika resan. The University presents will be a recurring event throughout the autumn, where the public will be given the chance to take part in the artistic research environment at Luleå University of Technology.
