VPN in Ubuntu - L2TP IPSec

To access some services and resources at Luleå University of Technology when you are not on Campus, you must use a VPN connection.

Requirements

  1. Employee at LTU
  2. Created password for Eduroam
  3. The guide is based on Ubuntu 18.04

Instructions

Please note that you should fill in your username without @ ltu.se BUT with your Eduroam password when creating the VPN connection!

  1. Open a console window and run the following to install GUI for L2TP:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get install network-manager-l2tp
    sudo apt-get install network manager-l2tp gnome
  1. Go to Settings and select " Network " click on + where it says VPN
  2. Select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol
  3. Fill in as below:
    Name: LTU-Staff
    Gateway: staffvpn.ltu.se
    User name: Your username at LTU, without @ ltu.se
    Password: Your Eduroam password
  4. Click IPSec Settings
  5. Make sure the IPsec tunnel two L2TP host is checked and fill in:
    Pre-shared key: staff-vpn1
    Phase1 Algorithms: aes-sha1-modp1024
    Phase 2 Algorithms: aes-sha1
    Click Ok
  6. Click Add

If the connection fails, verify that you have the correct Pre-Shared key and that you are using the eduroam password.
