A digital Polarforum 2020
Polarforum is a meeting place for all researchers with activities about and in the polar regions, the mountains and other northern areas. Luleå University of Technology hosted this year's edition of Polarforum, which was held digitally due to the current pandemic.
The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat organizes the Polarforum annually. Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor of Luleå University of Technology, started Polarforum 2020 and the participants were then followed by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat's director Katarina Gårdfeldt throughout the rest of the program. The day was divided into different sessions, with as many as 11 presentations within the three themes From the Arctic Ocean to the Southern Ocean - Expeditions 2019/20, Living in a cold climate and From the poles to space. The audience had the opportunity to ask questions that were answered in question times after each session.
Among the speakers were several from Luleå University of Technology. Dag Avango, Professor of History, told during the first session "From the Northern Arctic Ocean to the Southern Ocean – Expeditions 2019/20" about the Antarctic expedition CHAQ 2020, where they studied the historical remains of the first Swedish Antarctic expedition 1901–1903. Johan Casselgren, Associate Professor of Experimental Mechanics, who talked about measuring snow parameters and mechanical properties during the session "living in a cold climate".
