10 million SEK to new mining project

Published: 16 January 2017

Luleå University of Technology has a key role in a new major EU project on blasting and mining technology research.
– It's very exciting that we are involved and can help connecting the leading partners in blasting technology in Europe, says professor Håkan Schunnesson.

Luleå University of Technology is the only Swedish participant in the new mining project SLIM, that involves a total of 13 partner organizations from five different countries– Sweden, Austria, Denmark, France and Spain – and will run for four years.

Both universities and leading companies cooperate in SLIM (Sustainable Low Impact Mining solution for the exploitation of small mineral deposits based on advanced rock blasting and environmental technologies) that is funded by Horizon 2020, EU’s biggest research and innovation programme.

SLIM has a total budget of 70 million SEK, with 10 million SEK going to Luleå University of Technology.

– The project aims to reduce the environmental impact from the mining industry by reducing the amount of dust, vibrations and emissions from mines; Thus the entire spectrum of disturbances, says Håkan Schunnesson, professor of mining and rock engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Basic and applied research

Luleå University of Technology’s involvement in SLIM includes both basic and applied research.

– The project’s first two years will be an intense period of basic research in our areas of interest, says Daniel Johansson, associate professor of mining and rock engineering.

The research group in mining and rock engineering and Swebrec (Swedish Blasting Research Centre) will mainly conduct research in the following areas:

  • Civil explosives’ characterization.
  • Environmental impact and safety.
  • How rock properties affects the blast result.
  • Optimized mine production.

– One purpose with the project is to get a more selective mine production with reduced environmental impact, says Daniel Johansson.
