New computer tomography strengthens wood research

The university's research group in Wood Science and Engineering has been successful in financing a new state-of-the-art computer tomography (CT). The new CT scanner with associated software costs 10 MSEK and is well suited for wood and provides unique opportunities for industrial applications and new research projects.

– It is gratifying that we can invest in the new CT scanner and strengthen our research in computer tomography with a focus on wood and wood industry processes and new bio-based building materials. We will need to recruit more people for the exciting research that awaits and which will be useful for the wood industry, says Dick Sandberg, Chaired Professor in Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

The investment of MSEK 10 is funded by the Kempe Foundations with 6 MSEK, the remaining part is funded through the university.

World unique research

The university's research in Wood Science and Engineering in Skellefteå is the country's only academic group engaged in research and education that supports the development of the entire value chain of the wood-mechanical industry. This includes commodity assortment, decomposition technology and scanning, further processing of the sawmill to both construction and joinery components as well as more consumer-related products such as furnishings and furniture, production technology and market aspects.

– There is a great need from industry to be able to use the industrial computer tomograph more optimally in production, with the support of research. This could include improved measurement of wood properties, linking scan data to mail patterns, volume and value yields for different products, as well as backwards in the value chain against timber selection, says Dick Sandberg.

CT scanning of wood is something that the Division of Wood Science and Engineering at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, together with RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), has 35 years of experience in. It is about research and development in the field of computer tomography related to wood materials and industrial wood processes. The skills and infrastructure created with regard to research in computer tomography for wood industry applications is world-wide. Among other things, about 20 PhD dissertations have been produced and research has also laid the foundation for the industrial computer tomography that is now being used at the sawmill in Sävar (see article below).
