Symposium on Artistic Research in Piteå

Published: 16 November 2018

The School of Music at Luleå University of Technology hosted the Science Council's annual symposium on artistic research this week. The theme of the event was basic research aimed at initiating a discussion that clarifies different approaches to what applied research, new research and thematic research are within the artistic field of research.

– As the host of the symposium, we are given a unique opportunity to showcase our environment and the research conducted at Luleå University of Technology, says Monica Johansson, Head of Department of Arts, Communication and Learning.

Gathering new contacts

During the symposium that lasted for two days, presentations of artistic research were mixed with lectures and panel debates. The event gathered researchers from the Swedish music colleges, but also researchers from other universities and related research disciplines.
Monica Johansson sees the symposium as an opportunity to build new contacts.

– The symposium serves as a meeting place between various actors seeking collaboration with artistic research. It can hopefully contribute to both new collaborations and new ideas that can develop the artistic environment at Luleå University of Technology.

National platform

Stefan Östersjö is professor of musical performance at the School of Music in Piteå. For him, the symposium provides an opportunity to showcase the artistic research at the university.

– The Swedish Research Council's symposium is an important national platform and it is obviously important for us to showcase our artistic research. We have therefore created an exhibition in the venue that demonstrates selected parts of our research results, says Stefan Östersjö and emphasizes the importance of gathering the research field at the Swedish Research Council's annual symposium.

– It is at the symposium that much of the discussion about the subject's further development takes place, and for that reason it is an important platform and arena for the artistic research.
