Collaboration in the Barents region strengthens companies

Smart roads, a system for digital identities and IoT enabled reindeer husbandry. This is some of the content in a new, cross-border project coordinated by Luleå University of Technology.

In addition to Swedish representation, the collaboration project, called DIT4BEARS, has participating companies and universities from Russia, Finland and Norway. The main purpose of the project is to develop IT-based solutions in a cross-border context, solutions that will benefit companies in the Arctic region.

– In the project, we will simplify the mobility of people, products and knowledge in the Barents region. Sustainable and climate-smart transport and communication systems are important components, says Karl Andersson, Associate Professor of Pervasive and Mobile Computing at Luleå University of Technology and executive director at the Centre for Distance-spanning Technology.

Smart identities

One of the project’s goals is to develop a system for smart identities based on blockchains. The work will focus on digital identities that have traditionally been issued by trusted parties, such as authorities or banks.

– The goal is to develop a technology that uses block chain-based technologies with a global reach where the blockchain stores non-changeable identity certificates in a distributed system, says Karl Andersson.

– We developed this idea within the framework of another project about two years ago, now we can finally turn the ideas into technology, continues Olov Schelén, Associate Professor of Pervasive and Mobile Computing.

IoT infrastructure

In addition to smart identities, research will be carried out and solutions developed within the infrastructure area. Among other things, focus will be on smart roads and IoT enabled reindeer husbandry.

– For example, a smart road can contain road lighting or road markings that lights up when cars pass, or roads that automatically warn of slipping or obstacles, says Karl Andersson.

– IoT enabled reindeer husbandry means tracking reindeers via wireless connection and GPS receivers, or reindeers used for transporting data via so-called delay tolerant networking technology.
