– We will train 15 young researchers who have technical and innovative knowledge so that they can make progress in developing a new generation of artificial joints that last longer, provide fewer side effects and are also suitable for younger people. This means that the researchers will have the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary working methods that are also in demand by industry, says Nazanin Emami, professor of Machine Elements with a research focus on biotribology and polymer tribology at Luleå University of Technology.
The goal of the new project is to train a new generation of creative and innovative researchers who can transform knowledge and ideas into products and services. The situation is such today that up to a third of certain types of artificial joints do not last more than 10 years and can cause pain and severe inflammation for the operated. Among other things, more thorough tests and better design are needed. Therefore, the EU wants to support a broad collaboration between industry, healthcare and interdisciplinary collaborations within academia. In addition to interdisciplinary projects, the education will also offer students mentorship and help to develop their research careers.
– Yes, it will improve career opportunities in the private and public sector for young researchers who attend this education, says Nazanin Emami.
